One
of the most widely-used lagoon boats, measuring between 5
and 9 metres, it has a forward-leaning straight stem and a
straight transom. There are many variants of the sāndolo
to adapt it to a wide range of uses, from fishing
(sāndolo a la ciosōta, sāndolo
burančlo, sāndolo sampierōto, sāndolo da fagia),
to use as a pleasure craft and for regattas (mascaréta, puparėn),
to hunting (s-ciopon),
to transporting people (sandolo
da barcariol), etc.

Sāndolo
da barcariol
|
Sāndolo
da barcariol
This
is a type of sāndolo
which, like the gondola, is used in Venice exclusively to
transport tourists. It is painted black, equipped with parécio,
i.e. fitted out with small armchairs, a central divan,
gilded horses on the sides and a ferro (metal ornament)
shaped like a curl on the bow.
The
measurements taken from a survey of a sāndolo built in 1961
at the Bovo boatyard on the island of Burano are: hull length
7.60 m, beam 1.47 m, depth 39.1 cm.

S'ciopon
with the spingarda
(hunting
gun) being rowed alla vallesana
(with
crossed oars).
|
S'ciopon
This
is the smallest of the sāndoli
family measuring just over 5 m, beam 1.15 m and just 30 cm
deep. Its name is derived from the use of a large gun, spingarda,
used for hunting in the lagoon, that can be up to 3 m long
with a calibre of 75 mm and is called a s'ciopon.

|

This
is a light version of the sāndolo used as a pleasure boat
and for regattas with female competitors. The dimensions of

Puparin |
Puparėn
This
is a type of sāndolo used as a pleasure boat and for
regattas that owes its name to the slender shape of the
stern where the poppičre (stern oarsman) stands on a raised
footboard. The puparin has an asymmetical hull like that of
the gondola.
The
dimensions of a puparin da regata are: hull length
10.20 m, beam 1.25 m, bottom width 0.85 m, depth 0.41 m,
weight approx. 2 quintals.

Sanpierota
with sails. |
Sanpierota
or sampierota
This
is a rounded type of sāndolo, with a slightly
inclined transom and a bow stem with the characteristic
'nose' at the top. It is sorafālca all around. It
was used for fishing off the island of San Pietro in Volta,
hence its name. It is now a widely-used pleasure boat due to
its versatility: it can be used with sails, motor and oars.
The
measurements taken from a Sanpierota at the Schiavon
boatyard are: hull length 6,5 m, bean 1.84, depth 44.1cm.
If you would like to test
your boatbuilding skills on a real sanpierota, a full size
set of drawings of the templates are available. See drawing
of templates, scale 1:1, P 304.

One
of the rare surviving images of
a vipera. |
Vipera
The
vipera was a boat for six oarsmen, with symmetrical
bow and stern, with the stems resembling that of the sāndolo.
By the beginning of the 20th century it was no longer in
use. Two models of the vipera are on display at the
Museum of Naval History in Venice.
